Tuesday Tips & To-Do from Melva Loves Scraps

If you missed it, I kicked off the weekend with a wonderful finish of the Pieces From the Past ~ Revisited.  I included the adjusted cutting sizes for the Our Country block there, making it a 12" finished block to pair with the 12" Dragon Fly block.

Two things that I have learned in my years of quilting were helpful in the completion of this quilt.

#1 - Use some narrow masking tape to audition a quilt design.  You can see in the picture here how I had two similar, yet different, options...

#2 - When you are short of fabric for a ...

Spring Snow Monday from Melva Loves Scraps

After 3-1/2 weeks of nothing but dry days, high winds and extreme fire danger, we woke this morning to this...

We have about 8 inches of the white gold and it may continue for a bit longer.  Woohoo!

The smoke on Friday afternoon was horrible.  There were fires in New Mexico and the winds from the south blew it in, making us think that MUST be a fire somewhere in our area... Much to our relief, we realized it was just smoke from the south.

Last week, despite the crazy wind that was making me a little grumpy, I ...

Windy Tuesday from Melva Loves Scraps

The week was filled with great productivity and creative opportunities again...

✔ Finish quilting and binding of the Dreamscicle Quilt.  And I just had an email from my customer stating "the random pattern you did is just what was needed. Like the green thread. Thank you."

✔ Write a few stories for the Pieces in the Garden Sew Along. My brother shared with me a few of his favorite memories. You can find them (and a discount code for a tea purchase from Cornerstone Tea Company
in the Teatime with TT & Kelvin story.

✔ Celebrate my birthday!

All of the girls came for ...

Weekly Check-in, Musings and To-Do's from Melva Loves Scraps

Weekly Check-in!  The first full week back in the studio and I am happy to share things went smoothly.

Pieces from the Past BOM demonstration.

Quilter/participant Patti brought all of her blocks, completed to date, to share with the group.  She is a fairly new quilter, but she has not been scared away by any of the techniques or more advanced blocks.  I applaud her!

Post Vacation Monday's Musings from Melva Loves Scraps

I'm baaaaaaaaaa-ck!  And despite the fact that we returned on Thursday, we are still moving at a slower and more relaxed pace...  Really...  We just don't want to return to the faster pace that we were moving in preparation FOR the trip...

And we decided that that's okay.

Marching on Through March from Melva Loves Scraps

Time marches on... and it seems to be going at a much faster pace!  Maybe it is just me since we are trying to get things done and "in order" so that we can drive away with all of our responsibilities taken care of and/or covered and we can be worry free for a few weeks. Ahhhh.... I can feel it already!

✔ The instagram quilt fest posts are getting there.  I currently have through Day 29 - These WILL be done before we leave!  Just two more to go!  I'm grateful for the technology that allows me to participate ...

Monday Musings... 3/7/2022 And Tuesday's To-Do from Melva Loves Scraps

Just when we thought Spring was on its way for a return, we had another cold front pass through and bring more snow.  Bleh... I am tired of winter.  Anyone else?

Happy Two's Day! from Melva Loves Scraps

What a unique day!  2/22/22... that falls on a Tuesday!  How 'bout we celebrate with two tu-tus?

Below is our oldest granddaughter on her first birthday, sporting her fluffy tutu with pride.

This picture brings a big smile to my face every time.  She has always been a bit of a daredevil... there was no telling her to sit down in that rocking chair.  Five grandparents stood there holding our breath hoping that she would not topple off.  She did not and was quite proud of that too!

As I was completely absorbed in the studio, I was ...

Adjustment Time... from Melva Loves Scraps

It has taken a few days to work through the frustration and shock (and some relief) of losing our desktop computer...

Relief came once we had successfully rescued and backed up all of our documents and finally made the decision to order a new one and not deal with the likely future crashes that were certain to come (as we were warned by our techy son-in-law and our local emergency computer consultant).

And now we wait 12 more days for the new computer to arrive.  But who's counting?!?  My fingers are crossed that we actually get a little earlier ...

Orphans No More from Melva Loves Scraps

Winter has finally arrived in southern Colorado...  Though it only seems to appear for a day or so and then it thaws and leaves a mucky, miry, muddy mess that requires additional efforts to take our usual walks... but the view from the top of the hill is beautiful!

Dave and I use this walk to process and talk through the many things and situations that take place in life... and any exercise benefits we may get from it is bonus!

It is almost as vital to me as my creative time in the studio!

In recent months we have ...

Tuesday's Tip & To-Do List from Melva Loves Scraps

The other day as I started doing the pattern writing for the Pieces in the Garden Sew Along, I considered the importance of the SCANT 1/4" seam in quilting.  It seems (to me, at least) that is something overlooked.  When I first began quilting the 1/4" seam was taught to me... and that I could just use the edge of my presser foot for accuracy.

It wasn't until two quilts later, and much frustration, that I realized that the edge of my presser foot was NOT a 1/4" from the needle... it was more like 3 ...

Tuesday's Ta-Dah's! from Melva Loves Scraps

Last week when I made my list of quilty tasks I thought it was a far-reaching goal to get both the baby quilt AND my customer's Star Memory quilt completed...

I am thrilled to announce that I was successful!  Ta-Dah!

Mundane Monday... from Melva Loves Scraps

The mundane tasks of wrapping up a year and preparing for year-end reports and taxes took over but I have cleared the desk, paid and filed necessary reports, placed orders and I am ready to return to the studio bright and early on Tuesday morning!

While the "business" side of getting to do what we love to do can be mundane, it is necessary and I feel fortunate that I have the skills, confidence, knowledge and ability to handle the majority of the things that are required for our small business.  Tax forms will be on their way very soon ...

2022's First To-Do Tuesday from Melva Loves Scraps

It is a new year and a time when people try to become better organized with new planners and setting goals.  That is where the linky party, Tuesday To Do hosted by Linda, the Texas Quilt Gal, comes in.  It is where quilters share their weekly goals. What's all the todoo about To-Do?  Well, for me, it is a weekly accountability opportunity.  By nature, I am a list maker.  I make lists for things to be done, shopping lists, goals, and more.  Making lists keeps me organized and on task.  It allows me to write down my thoughts and ...

Fun Christmas To-Do's from Melva Loves Scraps

It is the week of Christmas...

Our stockings have been hung, even Hanna's properly facing stocking.  The presents have been wrapped, the tree decorated and Dave and I are ready to enjoy a few relaxing days as Saturday approaches.

I'll be prepping as much of the Christmas meal as I can ahead of time, Lasagna, so that I only need to pop it in the oven to bake.  One daughter is bringing pasta sauce to make spaghetti, the other is bringing salad and garlic bread.  It doesn't really sound like a gluten-free and dairy-free meal, but trust ...

Christmas To Do List from Melva Loves Scraps

As Christmas draws closer it could be easy to become frantic and crazy trying to get everything done... but what really NEEDS to be done?

To be honest, I have done most of the crossed out items on the list and can truly appreciate the "better choices" that are written in.  Over the years we have scaled back our celebrations and reduced our gift list.  Dave comes from a large family and a few years ago we decided to for-go the gift exchange for adults and pool our donations made to a charitable organization.

One tradition we have not altered ...

No Guilt::Go Quilt - Green Enchilada Chicken Soup from Melva Loves Scraps

Where would I be with out my slow cooker??? Stuck in the kitchen making dinner, that's where!

Thanks to my personal assistant and sous chef, my crockpot, I was able to FINALLY complete a few items that had been on my To-do list for weeks.  I'll share the recipe in a minute...

✔  The pattern test is DONE!  I can't share the finished top, but as I stated last week (and shared), one of the options allows you to use a panel at the center.  I had to add to the panel I had selected to get it ...

Tuesday's To-Do Ramblings from Melva Loves Scraps

The list is short and sweet this week...

❧  Finish the pattern test... The center panel is complete and I am pleased.  The only issue I had was that it was just a smidge too wide.  I took a very narrow seam on the left side of the prayer.  While not the ideal correction to the issue, I will bury it in the quilting.  I am planning to do the hanging diamond grid on the wall hanging and I think it will be just fine.

❧  Finish Hanna's Christmas Stocking...

The other stockings for the grands have little bells hanging from ...
